Hello Mahmud.

Starting with the basic chords ( MAJOR and MINOR ) :
establish what scale the part of the melody you want to add chords is
Is it C MAjor ? ( notes cdefgab without bs of #s .(flats or sharps )

lets say it is :
then yes youre correct but that limits you too much also if that was your ONLY choice

Any of the 3 notes of the chord of C MAJOR [ known also as CHORD 1 in C major scale ] ( C E G notes ) appearing in the melody is a good candidate to use the C chord, but especially the MIDDLE note E. as it gives more richness between a C BASS in the chord of C MAJOR and 3 notes above - the E in your melody , than just repeating 2 of the same notes in Bass and melody

This gap is known as a 3rd ( a major 3rd in fact as it comes from  the MAJOR scale -  cdefgabc )
1 2 3 4 5 5 6 7 8
C D E F G G A B C (<> scale of C )major notes
The red notes are CHORD OF C MAJOR  notes

* in the same way an A in the melody is given more richness with the F CHord ( F A C )
* and the B note in the melody is given more richness with the G CHord (  G B D )

feel free to continue to ask more on this discussion - its an interesting question

Hope I helped
thanks mike

Also: Every note of the melody does not need to fit a chord ....but if NO melody notes fit a chord note - ouch wont sound good

A good rough balance is that at least 60% + of the notes in melody fit one of the chord notes, whilst the other melody notes , even if not  part of the chord, can still be played while a chord they do not fit , is being played in the left hand.....

Something in melody like
Melody note identical to a Chord note,
followed by
Melody note NOT identical to a Chord note, but only one step away though not always  ( A to B or E to  f
followed by
Melody note identical to a Chord note,

is a simple way to start

THis is a very basic summry of a subject ( harmony ) that is endless and extremely interesting

Melodies change from one scale to another in some cases, and I wont deal with identifying that problem here.
Folk tunes and many Pop tunes often to stick to one scale ( or key ) Jazz and classical music changes keys more often )
Lets assume your melody is only in one scale for now . ( It only shows the notes of C Major).
C D E F G A B C

The four primary chords used for C Major would be chords 1, 4 and 5

CHORDS                                   CM  dm  em  FM  GM  am  bdim
SCALE NOTES                            c    d    e    f    g    a    b
CHORD NOTES  on 5th degree       g    a    b    c   d    e    f
CHORD NOTES  on 3rd degree       e    f     g    a   b    c   d
CHORD NOTES  on 1st degree       c    d    e    f   g    a    b

NAME OF CHORD                        1    2    3    4    5    6    7
(alternative to C MAJOR D MAJOR etc)

in simple terms
CHORD C (chord 1) , F (chord 4 ) and G (chord 5) are best to be able to sue by automatically ( with practise ) associating there notes with the scale melody ..practising many tunes in C Major is the only way .

TO start using melodies that change key or melodies that are in advanced scales is highly inadvisable until you have mastered the basic scales

You would apply the principle here next to the simpler scales in this order

A minor
F major ( one flat ( Bb) )
G Major  ( one sharp ( F#) )
Bb MAjor ( two flats  ( Bb +Eb ) )
D MAjor ( two sharps ( F# + C#) )

A very good site simply showing all the notes of all scales and chords (but not how to apply them and why as we are doing here ) is www.musictheory.net

For other visitors _some steps are  left steps out here- some will be in other posts ..but also feel free to add your own posts to help everyone - even short simple ones help
